Effective degrees of freedom: a flawed metaphor.
To most applied statisticians, a fitting procedure's degrees of freedom is synonymous with its model complexity, or its capacity for overfitting to data. In particular, it is often used to parameterize the bias-variance tradeoff in model selection. We argue that, on the contrary, model complexity and degrees of freedom may correspond very poorly. We exhibit and theoretically explore various fit...
متن کاملQCD thermodynamics with effective models
In this talk we extend the Polyakov-quark-meson model to N f = 2 + 1 quark flavors and study its bulk thermodynamics at finite temperatures in mean-field approximation. Three different Polyakov-loop potentials are considered. Our findings are confronted to recent QCD lattice simulations of the RBC-Bielefeld and HotQCD collaborations. Furthermore, the finite chemical potential expansion of the q...
متن کاملThe Degrees of Freedom in Hot Quenched QCD
In quenched QCD, on lattices with Nτ = 4, the absence of a pole in the pseudoscalar meson channel for T > Tc is demonstrated. A set of effective 4-fermi couplings is extracted. It is observed that this coupling is small in the vector channel for all T > Tc, but not in the pseudoscalar channel. The temperature dependence of hadronic parameters below Tc is found to be small. (Talk presented at th...
متن کاملConformal invariance and degrees of freedom in the QCD string.
We demonstrate that the Hagedorn-like growth of the number of observed meson states can be used to constrain the degrees of freedom of the underlying effective QCD string. We find that the temperature relevant for such string theories is not given by the usual Hagedorn value TH ≈ 160 MeV, but is considerably higher. This resolves an apparent conflict with the results from a static quark-potenti...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Effective Degrees of Freedom in Genetic Algorithms
An evolution equation for a population of strings evolving under the genetic operators: selection, mutation and crossover is derived. The corresponding equation describing the evolution of schematas is found by performing an exact coarse graining of this equation. In particular exact expressions for schemata reconstruction are derived which allows for a critical appraisal of the “building-block...
